EnOB: GEnEff

Novel building performance evaluation.

Currently, the energy efficiency of buildings is exclusively linked to the energy demand during operation. Although “efficiency” is defined as the ratio between the benefit and the effort, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), as the building’s benefit, is not considered yet.

Preventing inappropriate performance evaluations, the GEnEff project consequently proposes a new metric combining both aspects. In order to fulfill this goal, a Virtual Reality laboratory is constructed. While the IEQ of arbitrary indoor environments can be precisely experienced visually, acoustically, and thermally, a simulation model calculates the required energy to create the presented climate in real-life situations.

A subject study will finally enable a benefit-equivalent reevaluation of energy-saving solutions ensuring a more favorable rating for those solutions providing a better IEQ.
